This procedure is useful in diagnosing
and localizing leaky or damaged blood vessels in the retina.
A vegetable-based dye is injected in the arm, and an ocular photographer
takes pictures of the back of the eye over a half-hour period with
a special camera that can see the dye as it flows through the retinal
blood vessels. The images can be used to determine the most appropriate
treatment as well as calibrate the placement of lasers.
