Hordeolum, commonly known as a
stye, is small lump in the eyelid caused by obstruction of an oil-producing
gland. Hordeolum may occur in the upper or lower lids, causing
redness, swelling and some soreness.
Most styes respond to a simple at-home treatment of warm compresses
placed on the eye for 15-20 minutes followed by some light lid massage.
However, if the hordeolum does not diminish or recurs, medical attention
is advisable. The stye may require draining along with the use of
antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medications.
If the obstruction persists, scar tissue and pus may accumulate
within the eyelid. This is known as a chalazion.
Although a small chalazion may respond to warm compresses, larger
lesions require surgical removal or corticosteroid injections.
