Computer vision syndrome is the
term used to describe eye-related problems resulting from prolonged
computer use, such as eye strain and irritation. These problems
are more noticeable with computer tasks than other near work because
letters on the screen are formed by tiny dots, called pixels, rather
than a solid image. The eye has to work a little harder to keep
the image in focus.
Computer screens are not harmful to the eyes, but they can cause
eye strain. People experiencing symptoms from prolonged computer
usage are advised to take frequent breaks from looking at the screen
and blink frequently. In some cases, specialty lenses and proper
workspace design are helpful in order to reduce or eliminate the
problem. Appropriate ergonomic organization of the workspace is
also critical to minimize eye strain. Often, a separate pair of
glasses specifically designed for computer use is beneficial.
